2. Showcasing Student Writing Examples:

http://mrcoia.com/school/html/gallery.html
This will show you some of the work I've collected and posted over the past three years. It takes about 15 minutes to upload several pieces. I ask students to email me a copy of the piece, I copy and paste into my HTML code, then upload to my host server.

A student-designed web site on Huckleberry Finn. The students did the writing, and emailed all the work to Lisa. Her job was to compile and format into a working web page. Lisa gave me the files and I put them online. It seems like there are always several students who can do this.

3. Create your Own Web Site to Post Student Writing

Even if you are a neophyte in the computer world, you have the tools to post student work. Here are some steps and suggestions for you to get started.

  1. Realize that it's not as hard as it seems. It may take 10-20 hours of prep, but I think it is worth it.
  2. Ask your technology coordinator at your school about hosting a web page. Your school should be able to allot you a folder that can be seen outside of the school on the internet.
  3. Create the web page. Use Front Page, Netscape Composer, or Dreamweaver (it's more complex than the other two). I made a sample web page for you to use. Take a look at it. If you like it, download it, and change the content. Paste in your unique text and titles.
  4. Once your site is done on your computer, you'll need to upload it to a server. Talk with your server administrator at your school to find out how to FTP (File Transfer Protocol) your files to the server. It's not too difficult once you have the hang of it.
  5. Once you get a few more pieces to post, open up your site on your computer, change/add, then re-upload.

This type of posting is different than what we did with the E-Anthology. That site uses a complex database to allow users to post work. If you are interested in adding this into your teaching, I found a site that will allow you to do this. Here are the steps to check this out:

  1. Go to www.nicenet.org
  2. Click Join a Class (under Student)
  3. Enter in SZ03347M3Z as the class key. You'll be joining in my class. This will show you some of the features.
  4. You can post and reply just like the E-Anthology.
  5. If you like this, join as a teacher. You can create the categories and topics.

4. Incorporating Writing and Film

Creative Writing for Film Lesson Plan I submitted this to Apple Computer for a contest.

See the gallery of student films. "Taco Wars" and "Skate Fu" both won the audience awards for Best Picture.

Assignment Sheet for Poem-to-Film Project. Students found a published poem and made it into a short film using iMovie.
