| Two Discussion Questions |
- Do you think that Huck is actually responsible for Miss Sophia running off and what happened in result between the Grangerfords and
Shepherdsons?
- Do you think that Huck cried purely for the loss of his friend Buck or do you think that the death of Buck signified more than that for Huck?
|
| Two Important Passages |
- “Miss Sophia she turned pale, but the color come back when she found the man waren’t hurt.”
- If you had been reading carefully, this passage would have foreshadowed what was going to happen between Harney and Miss Sophia even before she got the note about half-past two. She didn’t lose her color over Huck and Buck’s safety, but for a man that she should have thought of as her enemy.
|
- “Buck went off ‘thout waking me up.”
- This comment shows that Huck thinks of himself as part of the family. He wanted to be right along side the Grangerfords helping them fight their battles. Even though he didn’t have any part in the feud, if the Grangerfords thought this was important so did Huck.
|
| Controversial Elements |
- The feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is very bloody and more often than not fatal. This doesn’t seem right, especially due to the fact that the origin of the feud isn’t even known by everyone that is involved in it.
- When Buck is telling Huck about the deaths that have happened due to the feud, he never shows any emotion except for anger. No one ever seems to be sad over the deaths. They just accept that it is supposed to be this way and don’t try and think of ways that they can stop the fighting to protect their loved ones.
