Chapter 24: "Lost Brothers Found"
Contributor: Milly Feitser
A Summary of Events
  • They painted Jim blue, calling him a sick Arab, so that he will be able to move around easier.
  • They bought store clothes.
  • After hearing from a kid that a rich man died they thought of another plan to cheat and fraud.
  • They got all of the information, including every bodies names, what they do, even the pets names.
  • They all went to the shore (excluding Jim) they played the two lost brothers from England and Huck played a valley.
Characters Involved
  • Huck: narrator of the story.
  • Jim: runaway slave Huck is helping.
  • King: a man Huck helped escape a lynch mob. Says he is “Looy the Seventeenth”
  • Duke: a man Huck helped escape a lynch mob. Says he is the heir to the dukedom of Bridgewater.
Two Discussion Questions
  • If the duke is so “uncommonly bright” why does he cheat and fraud other people, if he is able to get a decent job?
  • Why does Huck think that cheating people is bad, even though is father did it all the time? Is it because of the time he spent at the widows and what she taught him?
Two Important Passages
  • “He was uncommon bright, the duke was, and he soon struck it”

- If Huck thinks that duke is uncommonly bright, then it is a sincere thought. But the one word that highlights this passage is uncommon. It is uncommon to be bright is what Huck is saying.

  • “Well, if ever I stuck anything like it, I’m a nigger. It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.”

- Huck was ashamed of the town for acting like “they’d lost the twelve disciples”, carrying on. He knew that this is one huge fraud.

Controversial Elements
  • Huck is ashamed for the town, they are gullible.
  • King must have had a lot of practice making himself cry.
