Two Discussion Questions
  • Does it seem that there are situations where Tom is in control but only because he feels he should be and Huck should not be? Sometimes are Huck’s thoughts better than Tom’s?
  • What is stealing really, and why are the boys views of stealing so stretched?
Two Important Passages
  • “Well if it ain’t just like you, Huck Finn. You can get up the infant-schooliest ways of going at a thing. Why ain’t you ever read any books at all?

- Through this statement it is apparent that the only way for aTom to feel good about the things he is doing is to put Huck lower and lower to build himself up. He also shines his romantic literature knowledge through his theory that if you read the books you know the right way. Obviously Tom has only read the romantic novels.

  • “that ain’t got anything to do with it, Huck Finn. All he’s got to do is to write on the plate and throw it out. You don’t have to be able to read it. Why, half the time you can’t read anything a prisoner writes on a tin plate, or anywhere else.”

- This is important because it shows how absolutely stupid Tom can be. He does not make any sense what so over. If he ever listened to himself he would probably realize how ridiculous some of the things he says and does are.

Controversial Elements
  • Tom sees everything as not complicated enough. He wants everything to be romanticized and the reader wants to have the realism point of view cross over to everyone.
