| Chapter 6: "A Cabin, a Boy, and a Drunk" |
| Contributor: Jonathan Nomeland-Overvold |
| A Summary of Events |
Chapter six starts out with Huck talking about the changes in his life now that Pap is back. Pap now beats Huck for going to school, criticizes the widow for taking care of Huck, and harasses Judge Thatcher for “buying” Huck’s money from him. While this is going on Pap kidnaps Huck and takes him to an old log cabin three miles up-river from town. The widow even sends a man to bring back Huck but he is chased off by Pap. While Huck is staying in the cabin he admits he hates the “lickings” from his father but also seems to enjoy being back in the woods. However after a severe beating from his father Huck decides to run away. Pap leaves to go get provisions and Huck is locked in the cabin. Huck searches the cabin many times and finally finds an old wood saw. Using the saw he starts to cut a hole in the cabin wall behind a horse blanket. Pretty soon Pap comes home in a bad temper and Huck is forced to stop his work. Huck makes dinner while Pap cusses at Judge Thatcher, the widow, and the “govment”. After dinner Huck falls asleep while Pap starts to drink. Huck wakes up to find Pap drunk and yelling about snakes and dead people. Pap then sees Huck and chases him around the cabin with a knife. After tiring himself out Pap decides to rest so he can kill Huck later. Huck gets the rifle down and hides behind some barrels while holding the gun on Pap.

| Two Discussion Questions |
- Even after being kidnapped and beaten by his father Huck still seems like he enjoys being held captive in the woods, why do you think this is?
- When Pap falls asleep after chasing Huck with a knife Huck gets the gun down and holds it on his father until morning, do you think Huck would really shoot his father? Would he kill him or just wound him?
|
| Two Important Passages |
- “I was used to being where I was, and I liked it, all but the cowhide part.”
-Here Huck shows us that even though Pap has kidnapped him and beaten him he still likes being there.
|
- “I made up my mind I would fix some way to leave there.”
-Huck has had enough of his father’s beatings and decides to run away.
|
| Controversial Elements |
- Here we see just how crazy Pap can be with a little liquor in him, is the narrator/author trying to say something about the effects of liquor?
- We also see the depth of violence between Huck and his father, is Twain telling us something about his own father.
